I have tremendous faith in the life-affirming connection between birthing babies and birthing creative works. Both processes call for spirited focus, community support, intentional surrender, and finding trust in the most intimate moments of our lives.
I am a writer and performer interested in writing in various genres, particularly plays, creative non-fiction, memoir, plays, and poetry. I tend to have a preoccupation with writing about family, travel, race, and struggle for justice.
I wrote about the birth of my daughter, Xiomara Mia, in an essay titled: Birth As Battle Cry, A Doula’s Birth Journey from Home to Hospital, which will be published in the forthcoming, Birthing Justice: Saving Our Lives anthology edited by Julia Oparah,
My plays have been produced at Rites and Reason Theatre, Providence RI, (2008) the Dark Room, NYC, (2008) and UMASS Dartmouth (2012). In 2012 I was accepted to the Callaloo Creative Writers Workshop, where I studied fiction under novelists Maaza Mengiste and Ravi Howard. I am a Co-Founder of the Let’s Go there Collective, an all woman’s artist collective based in RI and MA, dedicated to developing new works that inspire and support social justice organizing. Our collective is made up of artists who are also parents, teachers, workers and organizers– and our creative process reflects our lifestyles and passions.
